Old Sarum Ruins

Old Sarum Salisbury,  the original home of Salisbury is set on a hill and the views from the English Heritage site are amazing, try and visit on a day when it’s not to windy, when I did I nearly lost my footing but felt elated having blown all the cobwebs away. All too often as local people we don’t see what’s directly in front of us, so I’ve been out with my trusty camera taking photos in and around Salisbury taking pictures not only of Old Sarum but Salisbury’s lesser known attractions as well and it made me realise (not for the first time) what a wonderful place I live and work in.

In September many places not usually open to the public will be accessible – the Clock Tower in Fisherton Street is one I’m looking forward to seeing.

Most people when they think of Salisbury they think Salisbury Cathedral which is sad as they are missing out on so much as there is so much more to see. St Thomas’s Church and the Doom painting, the interior of our local cinema, formally a wool merchants house. The court yard of the Red Lion Hotel a former Coaching Inn where horses would stop and be changed over before the next stop on their journey from London to Exeter.

The Salisbury Guild Hall  is open to the public where the city silver is displayed and photos of all past Mayors of the city. An exact replica of The Old Bailey can also be seen – used many times in films and TV episodes you can have your photo taken sitting in the dock and being taken down to the cells below which are also open for you to see.

I’m part of an online group called “Make it Happen” it helps me to think positively about where I’m going with especially at times when it seemed impossible to get it off the ground with a shrinking budget, I made mistakes along the way but learnt from them and that’s all you can do.
